Bae Bien-u is a contemporary Korean photographer. Featuring staccato organic forms such as trees, pebbles, and leaves in his photographs, Bien-u often works in stark black-and-white contrast. His work dually embodies a traditional, meditative ethos of South Korean culture, while at the same time suggesting a new kind of political landscape where a multiplicity of individual forms coexist in a peaceful, singular mass. He has achieved notable international attention with prominent collectors owning his work, including the singer Elton John and the former president of South Korea Lee Myung-bak, who would also gift a collection of Bien-u’s photographs to American president Barack Obama. Born in Yeosu, South Korea on May 22, 1950, Bien-u graduated from Hongik University's College of the Arts in 1974, and is currently a professor in Seoul National University's Department of Photography.
