(7 x 4.8 inches). iv, 236pp. A fine copy in publishers original green cloth binding with elaborate decoration and lettering in black and gilt to the front board and spine. Rear board with blind stamped borders and central publishers logo. Decorative floral endpapers. All edges gilt. Previous owners neat oval leather bookplate, lettered and decorated in gilt, on the front paste-down endpaper. A lovely copy of this famous work. --- Printing and the mind of man no. 375.

First issue of the 1st edition. 12mo., [Vol.1]331; [Vol.2] 307; [Vol.3] 315pp., illustrated with 24 frontispieces and plates. Bound in full morocco, with boards single lined in gilt. The six compartment spines are decorated with a five leaf flower in each compartment, and title and volume number in gilt. Edge dentelles. a.e.g. Tips very lightly rubbed. Spines sunned, with joints lightly rubbed. Some loss of gilt to the spine's lettering. New paste downs and added end papers. Each volume's title page, and volume 1's half title page have been stamped with an oval stamp. These stamps show signs of having been attempted to be erased. It is my belief, when coupled with the new paste downs and end papers, that this set was formerly an ex-library set, with an attempt to remove all library markings. Bound in publisher's plum-colored cloth with gilt spine lettering. Near Fine with faint rubbing at the tips, in a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with minor shelf wear. This edition preceded the much more common American edition; quite scarce signed.

Toning to the edges of the cloth boards with light wear to the spine heel and crown. Blue cloth boards & spine, gold spine lettering. Dust cover has been clipped to the top corner of the front panel with the original price still intact to the bottom corner. Heavy chipping to the jacket extremities, rubbing to the flap creases and sunning to the spine. New mylar cover. Very interesting copy in that it contains a monologue written in pencil to the second FEP by an unnamed previous owner outlining a journey taken by aircraft from Berlin to Paris in 1945 in which he visited the WWI battlefield at Arras en route.. Fully illustrated by Pogany with illustrated title page, 20 tipped-in colour plates, scores of other mono and two colour illustrations printed in light green and mauve, some full page, and calligraphic text, all within decorative borders, all illustrated or written by Pogany. A fine copy in the scarce publishers deluxe burgundy coloured suede binding with yapp edges. Lovely bright and clean gilt decoration and lettering to the front board. Top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. Original illustrated end papers. A fine and truly handsome copy of this classic work and a remarkable survivor. The suede bindings of this period are fragile and prone to drying out, often resulting in the suede perishing and the yapp edges splitting. Rare in this condition.

Complete in 19 volumes . Marbled endpapers. A biography of the author (b.1667-d.1745) by Laing Purves. Volume #1 with engraved portrait frontispiece and one additional plate. Chapters decorated with ornamentat headpieces & tailpieces. Armorial book plate, helmet over shield bearing name "Cragwood. " Volume 10, lower spine label missing. Volume 13 has a small leather chip on spine. Over all, except as noted, this set Is very good +. Rare Section; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

A Near Fine copy with a touch of fading to the spine in aNear Fine unclipped dust jacket with a small chip at the fold of the heel of the spine and light edge wear to head of the spine. Copies of this last volume of Anderson's short stories is extremely rare in dust jacket especially in collectible condition, and featured fourteen powerful stories by the man who greatly influenced the writings of Hemingway, Henry Miller, and John Steinbeck..

"The Pastures of Heaven" is a short story cycle consisting of twelve interconnected stories about a valley, the Corral de Tierra, in Monterey, California, which was discovered by a Spanish corporal while chasing runaway Indian slaves. Enchanted by the valley's natural beauty, the corporal names it Las Pasturas del Cielo or "The Pastures of Heaven." The stories are written in classic Steinbeck style; the lives of the families that relocate to the valley are portrayed with a mixture of humor and poignancy.
