Endpapers not original, added later. Some unobtrusive foxing throughout. Lacks the folding frontispiece. Interior is excellent and otherwise complete. This is a rare first edition of the "first and classic history of New York" (Streeter). A foundational text for any collection of books about New York or American colonial history, based on the official records of the administration of New York and on the earlier works of Colden and Charlevoix. The first edition covers history to the year 1732, though later reprints extended this coverage further. All edges gilt. 259 illustrations by Riou and de Montaut (though title page states 150 Riou illustrations). 467 pp. Minor scuffing to edges and sunning to spine. Corners bumped. Tears to cloth covering spine edges in the following places: 1.5" closed tear top right header, 2 closed 1/8" tears along right, 1/2" tear right footer, 2" tear left footer. Some small chips at spine footer and 1/8" strip lost from spine header. Some spots of discoloration to rear cover. Hinges are overopened but binding is quite sound. Minor foxing throughout, mostly marginal. Tight and clean. First double-volume edition, following only the magazine serials and the two-volume first printing, preceding all English editions. A beautiful copy of Verne's second novel in very good condition.

Midnight blue half-sheepskin binding, embossed percaline covers, spines have gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with hand coloured / hand finished engraved plates. These were created by the leading illustrators of the time, including Duverger, L. Markaert, R. King. The bindings are in very good condition, with a little rubbing to the edges only. Inside, the text and plates have light foxing throughout, but are overall in very good condition. Each copy online offers a different number of plates for each of the four volumes - but our copy seems to match the maximum collation for each variation (so seems complete.) The index is of limited use, as it only lists a proportion of the plates. A collection of [44] engravings by Antonio Tempesta [1555-1630] plus engraved title page, taken from the French Edition of Antonio Gallonio's work about the Tortures and Torments of the Christian Martyrs. Illustrations show images depicting human torture, devices, and various tools used throughout history. Early bookseller label of Henry March Gilbert [1845-1931] on upper left corner of front pastedown endpaper. Rubbing to corners and spine. Light staining to leaves and endpapers. Otherwise in very good condition. Atonio Gallonio [1556-1605] was a Roman priest in the Congregation of the Oratory. Interested in the Martyrs, Gallonio studied the various methods of torture they endured, resulting in a book on the subject, originally published in Italy in 1591.
