Octavo, gold cloth (hardcover), ix, 277 pp. Very Good, with former-owner signature and light foxing (age darkened spotting) to endpapers; in a Very Good, mylar protected dust jacket that has been price-clipped and has a sunned spine and edges. From dust jacket: “General” William Eaton was a man who sidestepped convention and security, and death itself, throughout a life rampant with both heroism and eccentricity. Barbary General is the first biography written about him in this century. Born in 1764, Eaton graduated from Dartmouth where his major concentrations were Oriental religions and philosophy. he married a faultfinding widow and, in 1792, in order to escape her, joined the Army. After five years as an Indian fighter, Eaton persuaded the State Department to appoint him U.S. Consul to Tunis. Upon arriving in the Muslim world, he began playing “Eaton of Arabia,” adopting Arab dress, attending mosque services, and eating with his fingers while squatting on the floor. In 1804, he convinced Jefferson that the Barbary piates could be defeated at Derna by a surprise attack from the desert, brilliantly exemplifying his unique capacity for creative aggression. Leading a force of frayed adventurers, Eaton marched 600 incredibly hot miles across the burning Libyan desert from Alexandria to Derna, defeated its amazed defenders, deposed the Dey, and established himself as ruler of the region. Never allowing his life to be governed by the type of behavior others expected of him, Eaton again began to carry on in his own tradition, assuming the role and attitudes of an independent Arab chieftain -- a most unusual American citizen. The U.S. Navy finally urged Eaton out of his forged desert kingdom, and he returned to the United States and a hero’s welcome. Unfortunately, the public soon forgot this man who summed up the human lust for adventure and self awareness, and at the age of 47, William H. Eaton, the “Barbary General,” drank himself to death.

If ever you're in the area, we invite you to come in and browse; to show our appreciation, we'll offer a 15 per cent discount off any purchases made on your first visit. The proprietor, Michael F. Slicker, is one of about 450 qualified members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America, Inc., and its affiliate the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. He was also the founding president of the the Florida Antiquarian Booksellers Association and is still an active member and committee chairman. In addition to keeping regular hours at the storefront location, Lighthouse Books participate as a vender in about a dozen book fairs, antiques shows, map fairs and related events each year. One such show is The Florida Antiquarian Book Fair, an annual trade show/charity benefit held in downtown St. Petersburg in the spring, that has become the oldest and largest antiquarian book fair in the Southeast; Slicker has served as Chair since its inception thirty years ago.
