Created by Billy De Beck as "Barney Google", the strip became known as "Barney Google and Snuffy Smith" soon after De Beck sought out Fred Lasswell to work with him. Lasswell took over the strip after De Beck died in 1942. John Rose, an editorial cartoonist, started working as Lasswell's inking assistant in 1998 and went on to take over the strip after Lasswell's passing in 2001. Even while drawing the strip, Rose continued working as the editorial cartoonist for the Ogden Newspapers of Virginia as well as creating work for the weekly syndicated "Kids' Home Newspaper". In addition to the comic strip, Rose published several collections of "Snuffy Smith" comic strip books. He was awarded the Lum and Abner Memorial Award for his rural humor. A series of a wildfire prevention ads starring Snuffy Smith won him a first place award from the Tennessee Press Association in 2018.
