Analysis of one of the best Russian examples of the nineteenth-century literary almanac, a genre of importance in the development of literature. NORTHERN FLOWERS was edited for seven years by the poet Baron Anton Delvig; the eighth issue was published as a memorial to Delvig, who died in 1831. Many of the most famous works of the Golden Age of Russian poetry --by Pushkin, Vyazemsky, and Baratynsky, among others--first appeared in the almanac. 267pp.
