The Bartholdi Statue of Liberty de HARPER'S WEEKLY - 1884

This lovely 1884 woodcut from Harper's Weekly depicts the construction of the Statue of Liberty. From a drawing by John Durkin, it shows the sculpture surrounded by scaffolding. The flame from her torch can be seen in one of the two insets along the bottom where a man is working on it. Another inset shows a man near the right foot. Forged by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, the statue is officially titled "Liberty Enlightening the World" and it is to this date recognized as a symbol of Freedom and Democracy. The portrait of Bartholdi is included in the top right. The print is in good condition with some edge wear and verso repairs. Minor foxing. Issued in the January 19, 1884 edition of Harper's Weekly. Harper's Weekly was a New York-based illustrated political magazine published from 1857 until 1916. The magazine featured foreign and domestic news, fiction, essays on many subjects, and humor. Its most well-known contributor was Thomas Nast, who made his career doing political cartoons for the publication.
