Madison: The American Thresherman, 1913. Fictionalized memoir of Bascom B. Clarke, born in Virginia in 1851, orphaned in his youth, who made his fortune in the threshing machine business in Indiana after the Civil War, moving to Madison in 1890. Includes romanticized accounts of antebellum southern life, 'happy slaves' and a slave auction; then Bascom's life as a refugee, escorted by various Union regiments to Indiana, and his efforts to make a living there. INSCRIBED by Clarke on the back of the frontispiece: "With love and Christmas Greetings B.B. Clarke 1913". Small hardcover, as pictured; no jacket, likely as issued. Light wear, corners bumped& rubbed, minor rumpling to spine; half-title about a third gone, with mended replacement, pages 1 & 2 torn & heavily rumpled; pencil name & date on free endsheet. Text clean; [10], 216 pages, frontispiece drawing by George W. French. . Inscribed by a Subject. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. Illus. by George W. French. Small Octavo.
