Thomas William Meany (September 21, 1903 - September 11, 1964) was an American sports writer who covered baseball in the New York City, New York, area. Meany began his career in 1922, where he was recruited to write for the New York Journal. Throughout his career, Meany worked for several newspapers, including the Brooklyn Daily Times, New York World-Telegram, New York Star and the Morning Telegraph. His book The Magnificent Yankees, about members of the baseball team the New York Yankees baseball team, was published in 1952 by Grosset & Dunlap. In 1961, he joined the New York Mets baseball team as a publicity director, and later serve as promotions director. He was awarded the J. G. Taylor Spink Award by the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in 1975. This includes chapters on 25 of Baseball's greats from several eras. Among those profiled are: Grover Cleveland Alexander, Roy Campanella, Ty Cobb, Joe DiMaggio, Bob Feller, Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig, Lefty Grove, Rogers Hornsby, Carl Hubbell, Walter Johnson, Napoleon Lajoie, Christy Mathewson, Stan Musial, Jackie Robinson, Babe Ruth, George Sisler, Tris Speaker, Honus Wagner, and Ted Williams. Tom Meany was one of the gentleman writers of baseball in the mid-section of the 20th century, whose books and magazine articles were a staple of what the nation's fans of the time seemed to demand: good reporting, nothing too controversial, writing designed to harbor baseball as the National Pastime.
