Xiv, 93 pp. Gilt decorated black cloth boards, with some slight rubbing to guilding of front board. Slight marking to boards and minor wear at corners and spine ends. Binding firm. Internally clean and bright, with very minor darkening to endpapers and fore-edge. Printed on handmade paper and illustrated with Claud Lovat Fraser's line drawings and coloured plates. Commemorates Nigel Playfair's revival of the The Beggar's Opera, which ran between 1920-23 at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith for a then record-breaking 1,460 nights. This production had innovative set and costumes designed by English artist Claud Lovat Fraser and music arranged by Frederic Austin. 26.5 x 20.5 cm. . Very Good. Gilt-decorated Boards. Sinopsis
‘Whore and rogue they call husband and wife: All professions be-rogue one another' The tale of Peachum, thief-taker and informer, conspiring to send the dashing and promiscuous highwayman Macheath to the gallows, became the theatrical sensation of the eighteenth century. In The Beggar’s Opera , John Gay turned conventions of Italian opera riotously upside-down, instead using traditional popular ballads and street tunes, while also indulging in political satire at the expense of the Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole. Gay’s highly original depiction of the thieves, informers, prostitutes and highwaymen thronging the slums and prisons of the corrupt London underworld proved brilliantly successful in exposing the dark side of a corrupt and jaded society. Bryan Loughrey and T. O. Treadwell’s introduction examines the eighteenth-century background of musical theatre and opera, the changing cityscape of London and the corruption of the legal system. This edition also includes a note on the music in The Beggar’s Opera and suggestions for further reading.

Courier services available. We are also able to offer same day delivery within London postcodes for some orders - ask for a quote. Valuable items will be sent via registered airmail or one of the courier services. Large orders can be sent via consolidation, which reduces the cost per book. In the unlikely event of an incorrect description, a full refund will be provided, but please e-mail/telephone first, and within seven days of receipt of the book. We are happy to comply to the EU's rules on distance selling. All books are published in London and 8vo unless stated, and remain my property until paid for in full.
