This is a fascinating snapshot of Central and Eastern Europe at a very significant moment in time. Although the book was published in 1990, the travels on which it is based were made in 1988/89. In other words, this is a detailed account of the Communist satellite states just before the collapse of Communism. By the time the prologue was written the collapse had already begun. This is a very perceptive study of the reasons why this bloc was on the point of collapse based on the author's personal observations and conversations with the citizens of these countries. A monument to a lost cause written in a very lively style. .
