Shirer, a radio reporter for CBS, covered Germany until the Nazi press censors made it impossible for him to report objectively to his listeners in the United States. Many of Shirer's German sources are disguised to protect them from retaliation by the Gestapo when the book was published. Shirer wrote in the foreword in April 1941 -- appeared to be giving me a somewhat unusual opportunity to set down from day to day a first-hand account of a Europe that was already in agony and that, as the months and years unfolded, slipped inexorably towards the abyss of war and self-destruction.
