FOUR-STAR BOOKSELLER FAVORITE **** This is the second book in a row that was not quite what I anticipated and, again, I am pleasantly surprised. Some have compared this to Kepnes’ You and, while I do agree that fans of You will appreciate and enjoy this novel, I would like to point out that Joe’s character actually believes that he is doing everything selflessly out of love. Paul, however, is under no such illusion. Everything he does is for his own benefit. Both narrators are unreliable and, dare I say, delusional. I have been in relationships with narcissists in the past and had no idea going into this book that the narrator is a malignant narcissist. Red flags were popping up left and right. If you can get past the offensive nature of his thoughts and quiet the feminist within, Best Day Ever is an insightful read. The story spans only the course of one day and yet increasingly reveals the cracks in their marriage and the life they have built together. At the risk of spoiling the ending just a tad, I would like to say that I am extremely pleased that Rouda chose to switch perspectives/narrators during the epilogue, which may have provided unnecessary insight after the climax.
