Gathering details brought together numerous town and gown individuals, including journalism students. Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michener then went to Kent to coordinate the details into a full report. He first kept a low profile for 10 days in the community to get a better sense of people and place. This condensed reprint is Part I of two magazine installments.
