Sobre este artículo
Sometime during the fifteenth century, Frederick of Hohenloke, Dean of the Bamberg Cathedral, commissioned this Biblia Pauperum, or "Poor Man's Bible", to educate his parishioners who, for the most part, could neither read nor write. Both the artist and the scribe had a single purpose in mind: to illuminate the stories of the Old and New Testaments and to make them appealing and understandable to the common man. On each page, the illustrator's imagination brings the Bible to life to delightfully naive folk art. Depictions, such as Eve as a young German girl with flowing blond hair seducing Adam to partake of the forbidden fruit and the rendering of Jonah, dressed in a medieval tunic as he is swallowed by the whale, aided in the spreading of Christian teaching to the masses. The directness of the vernacular German text and the sincerity of its fifty illustrations charms the beholder. For this beautiful edition, six colors have been used to achieve the subtle shadings of the original. Hand-cut acid-free paper has been bound between covers emblazoned with a gold leaf papal crest.
