William Pickering, London, first edition, 1834. 4 vols, 19th century half-leather and boards, marbled endpapers, all edges marbled, 8vo,. xii, 530 +531-1054 + 1055-1528 + 1529-2002 pp. The first edition of Lowndes' stupendous achievement and the only one to be published by William Pickering, this manual was issued in parts to form four "handsomely printed volumes" (Keynes). Breslauer and Folter annotate this in their catalogue: "First edition of what is still the best general bibliography of English literature from the book collector's viewpoint. A mildly ex-library set with British Museum stamps on the verso of the title-page and the final page, covers rubbed and worn, bindings sound and firm, contents clean and unfoxed with some light agetoning at page edges.
