The British Critic, and Quarterly Theological Review reviewed the first edition of 1808 appreciatively in 1810: "Bidcome Hill, whence this elegantly printed volume takes its name, is situated at the western extremity of Salisbury Plain.... Mr. Skurray has endeavoured in his principal poem to excite and interest all such feelings [of location and incidents]. The language is unequal, but often pleasing; the sentiments pure; with a strong tincture of the truest piety, and most ardent benevolence pervading the whole."
