The first edition published in England, of this humorous poetical work by American writer James Russell Lowell, in a leather binding. James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) was an American poet, editor and diplomat remembered for his association with the fireside poets.The Biglow Papers was one of his more renowned works, first published in 1848 in the United States. The work presents three primary characters, each depicting a different aspect of American life.An important American poetry collection.A leaf indicating the former owner has been bound in at the front of the work 'J.J Freeman'. Former owner's inscription to the front pastedown indicating the plates bound in this copy have been taken from the second edition. Illustrated with three coloured plates by George Cruikshank. This copy is also bound with an additional uncoloured version of the frontispiece. In a quarter morocco binding. Externally generally smart, with a mark to the leather of the front board, some rubbing to the raised bands of the spine and a chip to the tail of the spine resulting in some loss to the leather. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
