The jacket is protected by a removable Brodart clear-plastic sleeve. Previous owner's name on the front free endpaper. All other pages are clean and unmarked. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. Author's first novel about the Negro Baseball Leagues. It was made into a popular film in 1976 that starred James Earl Jones, Billy Dee Williams, and Richard Pryor. "First Edition" is so stated on the copyright page and there is NO tell-tale book club mark (dot or other indication) on the rear cover. However the dust jacket is price clipped, so who knows? Jacket design by Paul Bacon. It features a black player with colorful title on his shirt, illustration on back is of several players with baseball bats and a car. Bound in the original blue boards, with a brown cloth spine stamped in shiny silver. From the publisher: "William Brashler's novel is the story of a black barnstorming ball club in 1939, before Jackie Robinson broke baseball's unofficial color barrier.". First Edition (so stated).
