Beige paper covers printed in black. Stamp at the head of the front cover and title page for the Carl Schurz Memorial Foundation, Philadelphia. Bookplate for the Foundation inside front cover stamped "Withdrawn." Pages and plates are largely unopened. Contents: Family Gruidae--The Cranes; Family Rallidae -- The Rails, Coots, and Gallinules; Family Heliornithidae -- The Sun-grebes; Family Eurypygidae -- The Sun-bitterns. Robert Ridgway (1850-1929), was an American ornithologist appointed in 1880 as the first full-time curator of birds at the United States National Museum. An outstanding descriptive taxonomist, he wrote The Birds of North and Middle America, which was issued in 8 volumes, 1901-1919. Herbert Friedmann used Ridgway's work for the uncompleted ninth volume to produce this volume in 1941. In Very Good- Condition: front cover lightly soiled; rust mark on back cover; faint white call number at tail of spine; internally clean and tight.
