Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1927. Ribbed terra-cotta cloth in mylar protected dust-jacket. 316 pages. First Edition / First Printing (w/ "ducks quacked" on page 17). A near fine copy in unclipped jacket of Peterkin's second book. Peterkin (1880-1961) was born in South Carolina and learned the language and culture of the Gullah blacks from her nursemaid. Her novels, especially this one, were controversial and influential, notably on William Faulkner [FPAA,I, p. 297]. Previous owner's signature, minor chipping at jacket corners Size: Octavo.
