Joanne Harris was born in her grandparents' candy shop in France and is the great-granddaughter of a woman known locally as a witch and a healer. Harris is the author of three previous novels, Sleep, Pale Sister ; The Evil Seed ; and Chocolat , which was shortlisted for the Whitbread Award for Fiction. She lives in Barnsley, Yorkshire, with her husband and small daughter.
