New York: Jemima M. Mason, 1840. Hardcover. Very Good -. 716 p.; 23 cm. Contemporary half calf with marbled paper over boards. Six spine compartments between double gilt rules. Gilt-tooled title on red leather label in second compartment: "Blackwood's Magazine." Remains of small paper label at head of spine. Five issues bound together, each with its title page. Front fixed endpaper bears the bookplate of the Union Philosophical Society of Dickinson College, indicating that the volumes were acquired by the library in 1841; the bookplate is signed by librarian W. L. Spotswood. Blue oval stamp of Dickinson College Library below the bookplate. "Union Philosophical Society" written at head of first title page. Contents include reviews of Deerbrook by Harriet Martineau ("Miss Martineau's genius is essentially feminine, though its vigour and reach are those of a man"), and of Jacob Grimm's Deutsche Grammatik; and articles on the plagiarism of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and China and the opium trade. In Very Good- Condition: cover is rubbed; lacking front free endpaper and pp. 689-690; light soiling and foxing; solid.
