Shortly after leaving port the ship was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine and sank so rapidly that only one lifeboat floated into which 135 people were crammed. The boat drifted for 28 days and covered over 1,000 miles but when eventually it grounded near Sumatra, only the author and three others had managed to survive
