Author: From the book. "Often compared to Nabokov and Borges, Ishikawa Jun (1889- 1987) is one of Japan's most distinguished modern novelists. Winner of the Akusagawa Prize--Japan's most distinguished literary awards--"The Bodhisattva" is Ishikawa Jun's powerful satire of Japanese intellecuals in the 1930's, and is considered to be his seminal work."
Provenance and Translator Inscription: Provided by Xiaomei Chen. Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Chinese Literature, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures
UC Davis. In the 1990s, Professors Chen and William Tyler were associates and personal friends while at Ohio State University, Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures.
Jefferson gifted to Chen this particular copy in 1995 from his personal supply and bilingually inscribed it as shown in the first free endpaper (photo). (A full translation of the non-English portion of the Inscription has been translated by a Japanese Language expert and is available on request.)
Jefferson's distinctive broom image and reference to the lowly Buddhist monk and broomsweep, "Shis-te," replicates the dust jacket illustration as detailed on the back flap above the author's photograph (photo).
Professor Chen subsequently accepted a comparable position with UC Davis and later served as Department Chair for several years until her retirement a year ago. She donated this book to the Department Library.
When the UC Davis East Asian Languages library was disbanded due to budget reductions, this book copy was gifted to the Friends of the Davis Public Library.
