Famous first part presents for the first time atomism or corpuscular theory. Part one is on Bodies: Science - Physics, Biology - plant and animal, Chemistry, Electricity, Magnetism - postulates theory of loadstones, the 5 senses, colors, Memory, and generation of animals. Part two is a Treatise of Mans Soul: The nature and Operations of Mans Soul out of which the Immortality of Reasonable Souls is convinced. Part three is of the Sympathetick Powder. A Discourse in Solemn Assembly at Montpelier: made in French by Digby in 1657. Part four is a Discourse Concerning the Vegetation of Plants Spoken by Digby at Gresham - College on 3rd of Jan. 1660 at a meeting of the Society for promoting Philosophical Knowledge by Expt. Several woodcuts near beginning of parts. Title page, 55 pages before main text, 439 pages in part 1, Title page, (ix ) 1 -142pages in part 2, Title page, 143-203 pages in Part 3, title page, 209-231 pages in part 4. 7 3/4" x 6" x 1 7/8", laid paper. Printed by S. G. a nd B . G. for John Williams, and to be sold in Little Britain over against St. Buttolphs-Church. A few passages in Greek and Latin. Binding is believed to be original 17th century. Mottled full leather. Front and back board have a double incised line around perimeter and a stylized flowers and stem design stamped in each corner. Spine has a line of punch marks with two incised lines on each side of each raised band. Front board detached. Raised bands with some blindstamping. Leather cracked at hinge. About 1/3 of leather gone on spine around perimeter. Leather missing at outer corners of front and rear boards. Front pastedown dirty. The 2 prelims. are loose with folds, chipping, pen inscription apparently in Latin crossed out. Page edges browned some. Text overall is in very good condition. Last few pages were dogeared. Small tear at corner of rear free endpaper. Rear endpaper soiled. Back board attached but endpaper cracked. .
