BACKGROUND/DESCRIPTION: Story of old Louisiana. This is the author's first work on the Acadians or Cajuns. The story was based on the time he spent working for the U. S. Census Bureau in the bayou country west of New Orleans. George Washington Cable (1844-1925) was an American novelist notable for the realism of his portrayals of Creole life in his native Louisiana.
