Elaborate gilt stamped decoration to front board on cream buckram cloth over bevelled-edged boards. Gilt to spine worn & dulled. Binding structurally sound with minor edge-wear. Previous owner gift inscription central to front free end-paper and dated Christmas 1924 in same hand to lower corner of rear endpaper. Margins & end-papers quite toned, otherwise contents clean, text-block binding sound. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in removable plastic sleeve. 24.4cm tall. Xvi + 104pp, complete. First edition, beautifully illustrated by Herbert Granville Fell (1872-1951), whose work was influenced by the pre-Raphaelite, symbolic, and art nouveau movements. A contemporary review described the volume as"perfection" (The Sketch, p. 3). Joseph Jacobs (1854–1916) was an historian of Jewish culture, a literary scholar, and one of the most popular 19th-century adapters of children's fairy tales. His introduction emphasises the literary and artistic (rather than the theological) importance of the Book of Job. Quarto. Original cream cloth over bevelled boards, spine and front cover lettered and elaborately decorated in gilt. Woodcut frontispiece and numerous illustrations to text, title page printed in black and red, all by Herbert Granville Fell.
