He was a versatile man and had a fascinating life. He confronted George Washington at Fort Necessity, was second in command to Montcalm during the Seven Years War, wrote a treatise on integral calculus at the age of 24, and led one of the most exciting and valuable scientific expeditions around the world. He is associated with the thorny climbing plant known as Bougainvillea, including its discovery and importation into Europe and America.
