Sobre este artículo
London: British Museum Publications Ltd, 1989. Book. Near Fine. Card Covers. First Edition. 9 5/8" x 7 3/8". 32 pages, 5 colour and 40 black and white illustrations. Never before in his long career in restoration has Nigel Williams had to break the priceless object he was about to restore. But in the case of the Portland Vase, a supreme example of Roman cameo glass that was smashed into hundreds of fragments by a deranged museum visitor in 1845, the earlier repair work was disintegrating. The British Museum therefore decided that the Vase should be dismantled piece by piece, and rebuilt using the most modern techniques, to last at least a century. Each step of this delicate task, which was begun in 1988 and took nine months to complete, is recorded here with the aid of many photographs. The history of this incomparable glass vase, its manufacturem and decoration, are also discussed..
