Contemporary Tree Calf, recent re-back and new headbands. PP207,title page watermarked 1801, seven folding plates of engineering and mathematical diagrams. Neat, early ownership mark on front pastedown of George Wayne M.E. Skillful repairs to three plates, with very small loss on one plate mainly to blank and fold line area. Pages lightly browned in clean and bright order throughout. A rare early work on mine surveying.

The Whitpain Library Company was a subscription library established in 1817 in Broad Ax, a village in Whitpain Township, Pennsylvania; in 1884 it contained 2,000 volumes. Theodore M. Harrar (b. 1846) represented Montgomery County in the Pennsylvania House in 1883 and 1884. In Very Good- Condition: cloth is rubbed and faded; most of gilt is lacking from spine; three small splits in cloth; one plate is detached but present; otherwise, clean and tight.

The Pennsylvania Society for the Promotion of Internal Improvement, organized in 1824, sent William Strickland (1787-1854) to England in 1825 to study the most recent developments in transportation engineering in order to improve the ability to travel and ship goods across the state. Over the course of the year, Strickland sent home reports on canals, railways, roads, and iron-making from Great Britain. After his return in Dec., he was appointed engineer of the Pennsylvania State Canal and his reports were issued in this volume.
