After coming to America in 1710, he established the New York Weekly Journal to oppose the policies of the provincial government. He was brought to trial for seditious libel (1734-1735) and defended by Andrew Hamilton and acquitted. The decision in this landmark case eventually helped to establish freedom of the press in America..
