From dust jacket: The bombing aeroplane is one of the most emotive subjects in aviation history, with its connotations of agression and war against the innocents, yet it is a truism that no conflict can be won by defence alone. Two great world wars demonstrated the fast growing power of the bomber, whether in support of soldiers on the ground or in use against the economic and industrial structure of a nation. Its weapons have inevitably grown in size and destructive power, culminating in the modern megaton nuclear weapons -- themselves perhaps the ultimate deterrent of aggression on a major scale. The book describes the inexorable advance of the bomber, a story that embraces great achievements, the solutions to technical problems, the display of great courage and extraordinary feats of organisation, command and leadership. It describes the growth of a powerful British bombing force during the final months of World War I, and tells of Trenchard’s efforts to win survival of the Royal Air Force in the peace that followed, and the frantic race to re-arm in the face of growing danger from Hitler’s Germany. It chronicles the means by which Royal Air Force Bomber Command acquired its awesome power to destroy Germany’s ability to wage war. Finally, the contribution to postwar peace made by the Valiant, Vulcan and Victor bombers is described in this exceptionally detailed work, which in numerous instances reveals, as a result of the author’s recent researches, important historical material that has seldom, if ever, been recorded in published form.

We have a wide variety of general stock, including a large landscape/gardening section, a great selection of Christian/church history/Bible study titles, Beat literature, fishing, aviation, maritime, Asian history, African history, European history, South Pacific, British history, archaeology, psychology, philosophy, Latin American and Caribbean history, Canadian history, discovery & exploration, art, antiques & collectibles' reference, pop-up books, railroads, hunting, fire arms, etc. About 25 per cent of our total stock is listed in our online inventory. If ever you're in the area, we invite you to come in and browse; to show our appreciation, we'll offer a 15 per cent discount off any purchases made on your first visit. The proprietor, Michael F. Slicker, is one of about 450 qualified members of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America, Inc., and its affiliate the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers. He was also the founding president of the the Florida Antiquarian Booksellers Association and is still an active member and committee chairman. In addition to keeping regular hours at the storefront location, Lighthouse Books participate as a vender in about a dozen book fairs, antiques shows, map fairs and related events each year. One such show is The Florida Antiquarian Book Fair, an annual trade show/charity benefit held in downtown St. Petersburg in the spring, that has become the oldest and largest antiquarian book fair in the Southeast; Slicker has served as Chair since its inception thirty years ago.
