Tübingen: printed by Buchdrukerei H. Lapp Jr. , circa 1956. First edition. Hardcover. Very good/fair. Octavo (standard size). Slight wear to edges and corners of boards. Dust jacket is browned and chipped, with spots on covers. Ink outlines around the top unit symbol on cover. Page edges slightly browned. Name of former owner at top of table of contents page. 328 p. w/ b&w illus., maps in an attached pamphlet at rear. 3 unit histories in one. First organized in 1939 as the 78th Infanterie Division, it performed garrison dutis in France and then sent to Russia in Operation Barbarossa. It fought all the way to Moscow, and was heavily worn down in the defensive fighting that winter. Refitted and strengthened, it was redesignated the 78th. Sturm Division, and fought at Kursk and against the summer Russian offensive, but was destroyed in the encirclement at Minsk. Reconstituted as the 78. Grenadier, then Volksgrenadier Division, then finally the 78. Volks-Sturm Division. It fought in both Silesia and Czechoslovakia, surrendering to the Soviets at the end of the war.
