First organized in 1939 as the 78th Infanterie Division, it performed garrison dutis in France and then sent to Russia in Operation Barbarossa. It fought all the way to Moscow, and was heavily worn down in the defensive fighting that winter. Refitted and strengthened, it was redesignated the 78th. Sturm Division, and fought at Kursk and against the summer Russian offensive, but was destroyed in the encirclement at Minsk. Reconstituted as the 78. Grenadier, then Volksgrenadier Division, then finally the 78. Volks-Sturm Division. It fought in both Silesia and Czechoslovakia, surrendering to the Soviets at the end of the war.
