Myres When first published in 1936, this engaging biography was subtitled "The Thrilling Experiences on Our Southwestern Frontier of John William Poe, as Buffalo Hunter, United States Marshal, Sheriff, Rancher, Banker." In his widow's enthusiastic account, Poe's life is traced from his birth in Kentucky, through his experiences in Texas during the 1870s as a successful buffalo hunter and apprehender of cattle rustlers, to his life in New Mexico. Poe gained considerable fame by being present in July 1881 at the climax of the bloody Lincoln County War when Sheriff Pat Garrett shot and killed Billy the Kid. Poe followed Garrett as sheriff, resigning a few years later to establish a ranch near Fort Stanton. Later he became a banker in Roswell. Buckboard Days "mirrors in its every line," according to Eugene Cunningham, "the reaction to a frontier environment of a sensitive and cultured and observant woman." Sandra L. Myres says that "this is as much Sophie's story as it is John William's. It is a delightful, and often in-spiring, account of a young woman's courage and perseverance, and it deserves to take its place among the other books by pioneer women which are at last becoming recognized as an important part of the literature and history of the American West.
