Seattle: University of Washington, 1931. First Edition. Stiff printed wraps. Fair. 8vo. Pp. 119. Thick wraps, titles in black on the covers, side stapled. Covers soiled and stained with chips and creases; edges rubbed, staples oxidized, previous owner names and addresses in ink on cover and title page. Annual directory of students with phone number, address and place of origin. With faculty, map of the campus, calendar, offices, and organized houses including sororities and fraternities. Future actress Frances Farmer is listed as a Freshman from Seattle.
Farmer entered the University of Washington after winning a national essay contest while at West Seattle High School. Her essay, "God Dies," was influenced by her precocious interest in Nietzche. She performed in several University of Washington plays under the tutelage of Drama Dept. head Glenn Hughes. (Hughes would later appear in the 1950s episode of "This is Your Life" that was devoted to Farmer.) His influence was edifying: Upon graduation Farmer embarked for New York, where she became involved with Clifford Odets and his Group Theatre. Scarce piece of Farmerana, now housed in a clear archival sleeve with an acid-free backing.
