Dutton, New York, 1994. First Edition. Hardcover (1/4 Boards 3/4 Boards). Very Good Condition/Very Good. 1/4 black coloured backstrip with gilt coloured titles. 3/4 black coloured boards. Illustrated dustwrapper with yellow and pink coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. Colour photograph of author to the rear dustwrapper panel. In which we find Bernie a proprietor of a second-hand bookstore (turning a small profit!), until his new landlord wants to raise his rent $10,000 per month. So going back to his former profession of burglar, he slips into a supposedly un-tenanted apartment, steals a very large amount of untraceable cash and spots a naked man, dead, in the bath. The apartment just happens to be his new landlord's brother-in-law's, and, not only is the cash missing, but a million-dollar baseball collection is also missing and Bernie's been framed for it. Bernie has a lot to do to (burglary -wise) till he is safe. Softening and rubbing of the backstrip edges with rubbing of the book corners. Some marks to the book panels with age toning of the text block edges and pages. Previous owners sticker to the top right hand corner of the front paste-down. Rubbing of the dustwrapper edges and panels and there are a few small closed tears to the top dustwrapper edge. Remnants of a sticker can be seen to the lower left-hand corner of the front panel. Sinopsis
Bernie Rhodenbarr is actually trying to earn an honest living. It's been an entire year since he's entered anyone's abode illegally to help himself to their valuables. But now an unscrupulous landlord's threat to increase Bernie's rent by 1,000% is driving the bookseller and reformed burglar back to a life of crime -- though, in all fairness, it's a very short trip. And when the cops wrongly accuse him of stealing a priceless collection of baseball cards, Bernie's stuck with a worthless alibi since he was busy burgling a different apartment at the time . . . one that happened to contain a dead body locked inside a bathroom. So Bernie has a dilemma. He can trade a burglary charge for a murder rap. Or he can shuffle all the cards himself and try to find the joker in the deck -- someone, perhaps, who believes that homicide is the real Great American Pastime.
