Sobre este artículo

Viking, Ringwood, Victoria, 1994. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. Illustrator: Jack Chalker. IV, 136 pages, last page blank, foreword by Sir Edward ( 'Weary' ] Dunlop and index. The text is illustrated with both colour and black-and-white drawings and sketches made by the author while a prisoner of the Japanese during World War II along the Burma-Siam Railway. Illustrated dustwrapper with ochre coloured titles to the front dustwrapper panel and ochre and black titles to the backstrip. Sepia toned photograph of the author to the rear dustwrapper panel. A little rubbing to the dustwrapper corners. After the fall of Singapore in 1942 the author became a prisoner of war of the Japanese. He spent that time in Singapore and in the Thailand-Burma railway camps. " during this time, in furtive secrecy, he made diary notes, sketches and paintings recording life and conditions around him, using whatever materials he could scrounge. He also worked beside the renowned Australian surgeon 'Weary' Dunlop, a fellow prisoner, documenting the ravages of disease, wounds and starvation as well as the ingenious medical equipment fabricated in the camps. Amid the overwhelming mystery on all sides Chalker could always find beauty, and his illustrations include delicate renderings of local flora and scenery." -- from the front fold over panel blurb.
