In this book James Salter tells of his life – the first half – of growing up in New York, then, to please his father, going to , and graduating from West Point, joining the United States Air Force as a pilot and flying combat duty in a Korean War. Then, in his second life, the author tells of resignation from the Air Force and finding his way as a writer in New York, and finally to Hollywood and films – telling of the people he met and influences both good and bad.
