Octavo. v, [3, tables], [4, chromolithograph ads for Heald's Business College], 192, 16 [ads] pp. Illustrations throughout (mainly of products). Publisher's blind-ruled purple cloth with gilt cover lettering. Some wear to spine extremities and tips but overall a very good copy, clean and tight. Contains much useful information of the business environment of the West Coast in the early 1870s as well some fine ads for various manufacturers. It also contains two first book appearances of Mark Twain pieces [BAL 3348] and other contributions by Ambrose Bierce and Brett Harte.

192 pp. 16 pages of ads at the back. Ads also at the front with a few in two-color. Original maroon cloth. The title in gilt on the front cloth reads, "Tales, Sketches, Poetry and Music." Contains an original Twain appearance as well as an early printing of his "Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". Other writings about Twain. Includes some early writings of Bret Harte. Here is also the first appearance in book form of Ambrose Bierce. Upper corner of covers and text block bumped. Covers have some staining. Old leaf stain between pages 44-45. Circular private library stamp to the front pastedown and also to the lower spine. A near very good copy of a scarce, early California item.
