A few of the plates are bound in different places than listed on the contents page but all are present. 4 pages of publishers adverts for the colonial library at the rear of the book. The text and illustrations are fine, clean and bright throughout and look unread. Publishers decorative green cloth which has dark blue illustration to the front board and spine. Gilt lettering to the spine. Decorative light blue and white floral endpapers with ship and swan designs. There are a couple of small closed tears to the spine and the cloth is a bit rubbed and bumped and has a few small marks but is generally in very good condition with the gilt on the spine still quite bright. First French edition. A lovely copy in the original wrappers (paperback covers) and the publisher's glassine. Pages tanned, as usual. This copy is inscribed by Wright, "A M. Fernand Fahre, Hommage de l'auteur Richard Wright." Books signed by Wright are not common.

1831 Victor Hugo 1st ed Hunchback of Notre Dame French Lit Brussels FINE 3v SET

The best-known and oft-considered greatest French writer is unarguably Victor Hugo. His romance novels and stories have withstood the test of language and time. One of Hugo's most popular stories is 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'; a tale of a gypsy who catches the hearts of men including a hunchback named Quasimodo. This work has been transformed into dozens of stage, film, and television adaptations.

This 1831 three-volume edition was published the same year as the first edition. In fact, the popularity of 'Notre Dame' forced publishers to print many editions very quickly. This particular edition was printed by Louis Hauman in Brussels as part of the complete works of Hugo; however, this set is entirely complete in itself ending with the expected 'Marriage of Quasimodo'.
