He would have agreed with us that his life was an extraordinary drama, and he would not have been surprised to learn that, so long as two students of his biography are in the same room, subjects of conversation and controversy are never lacking. This book is an attempt to isolate a certain period of his life, and through his relationship with his public and with the social and political existence of his period, to carry the study of his temperament a step further.
