Sobre este artículo

UK,8vo HB,minus dw/dj,illustrated 1st edn,9th imp.[First published November,1933.This 9th impression dated November,1939.] VG+. No owner inscrptn but Sunday School presentation adhesive bookplate pasted front free endpaper, dated Xmas,1940 and bookseller's impressed stamped name to top,right-hand corner of same, and minus it's dw/dj. Negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges, corners, head+foot of spine/backstrip minisculely bumped with reciprocal crease, corner tips with age-acquired but miniscule rubbing and gentle curl, but no nicks, tears or splits present.Top+fore-edges with inevitable age-acquired toning with minimal foxing/spotting; contents bright, tight, generally clean, solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips, appears unread apart from my own collation.Publisher's bright, crisp, original plain black cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked blue ink lettering, and plain white endpapers - bookplate excepted.UK,8vo HB,minus dw/dj,1st edn,9th imp,5-255pp [paginated] includes Foreword byAlfred B. Buxton [Studd's co-partner in Africa],author's preface,a Contents list/table Illustrations list/table to its reverse,23 chapters,8pp contemporary b/w biographical photographs includes subject's portrait photographic frntis, remainder photographs interspersed throughout the text and the book; plus [unpaginated] half-title+title pages. Visually the exterior appearance is more than acceptable, and even internally, the book is also in a more than acceptable condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its 80+ year-old age. It is only the minimal exterior faults that prevents a slightly higher overall grading.Despite them,it really is still an exemplary example for its cleanliness, brightness and lack of any major detracting faults. The definitive biography on the life of Charles Thomas Studd, the founder of WEC International. C. T. was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took a pass degree in 1883. Cricket was clearly of much greater interest to him than academic study, and, like two of his brothers,he played cricket for both Eton and Cambridge University. The three brothers captained the university team in successive years, from 1882 to 1884. Studd played in the original 1882 Test against Australia where the ASHES were first named and was one of the last two batsman in. When Studd went in, England needed a mere ten runs to win but an eccentric performance by his batting partner Ted Peate led to the match being lost. A week later, the relevant edition of the Sporting Times included a mock obituary which has assumed iconic status: IN AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRANCE OF ENGLISH CRICKET WHICH DIED AT THE OVAL, 29 August 1882,DEEPLY LAMENTED BY A LARGE CIRCLE OF SORROWING FRIENDS AND ACQUAINTANCES R.I.P. N.B.-THE BODY WILL BE CREMATED AND THE ASHES TAKEN TO AUSTRALIA. Studd's fame lives on though through the inscription preserved on the Ashes urn to this day, which reads, 'When Ivo goes back with the urn, the urn; Studds,Steel, Read and Tylecote return, return; The welkin will ring loud, The great crowd will feel proud, Seeing Barlow and Bates with the urn, the urn; And the rest coming home with the urn.' [Wiki.] Norman Grubb was a celebrated author in evangelical circles. He fought in the First World War and was educated at Cambridge, where he founded the Christian Union. After graduating he and his wife served as missionaries in the Belgian Congo, with the World Evangelical Crusade. He played a leading role in setting up the Christian Literature Crusade. In later life,he lived in America, where he was a pivotal member of the WEC. He died in 1993.
