Sobre este artículo
Bello Horizonte, Imprensa Official do Estado de Minas, 1902.. FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Large 8°, late twentieth-century half red morocco over marbled boards, spine with raised bands in five compartments, gilt letter, original white printed wrappers (lightly soiled) bound in. Very light browning. Overall very good condition. Author's five-line signed presentation inscription on the title page to D. João da Camara. 190 pp., (2 blank ll.). *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION of this long novella or short novel by a Brazilian anarchist. A caboclo is a person of mixed indigenous Brazilian and European ancestry. While the present work is not one of great literary achievement, it is important for its attempt to promote social justice. This is the author's first book written without collaboration. His only previous work, A mulher (1890) was written jointly with Luís Cassiano Martins Pereira.[Antonio] Avelino Fóscolo (Sabará, 1864-Belo Horizonte, 1944), was a Brazilian abolitionist and republican turned anarchist, who wrote a number of works of fiction, as well as a play, and contributions to newspapers and magazines. He was the first novelist to set his works in Belo Horizonte and envirns, and the first to produce works with proletarian themes. All of his works of fiction take place in Minas Geraes. He was a descendent of Ugo Foscolo, Italian revolutionary, writer and poet of Greco-Venetian origins.Provenance: D. João da Câmara (João Gonçalves Zarco da Camara, 1852-1908) was one of the most noted Portuguese playwrights at the turn of the century. See Etelvina Santos in Machado, ed., Dicionário de literatura portuguesa, pp. 92-4; José Oliveira Barata in Biblos, I, 860-3; Dicionário cronológico de authores portugueses, II, 350-2; Fonseca, Aditamentos pp. 194-5 and Rebello, 100 anos de teatro português, pp. 55-6.*** See Wilson Martins, História da inteligência brasileira, V, 194.
