Set in the 1860s, it is about a lively eleven-year-old tomboy named Caroline, nicknamed "Caddie", living in the area of Downsville, Wisconsin in the United States, and her experiences with the nearby Indians. It was written in 1935; Brink transformed it to a drama in 1945.
