Magical realism is not my preferred genre, but if In Calabria represented the style, that's where I'd look for my reads. Whether Beagle's protagonist is a gruff Italian or a Yiddish alte kokker, he engages me, and leaves me feeling at least a little bit better about the world--the world in which I live and interact, as well as the fantasy world in which part of his action takes place.
