"Every one who really knows Southern California knows that is a remarkable situation. He knows that if all the world realized what Nature has done for Southern California, and what man has done to aid nature, there wouldn't be standing room from the Mexican border to the tops of the Tehachapis. And why doesn't all the world realize this - what's the answer? Ah, Brother, it's because Nature is a wise old dame and all men are liars." - p[5].
