Hannibal, Missouri: H. Haines, 1944. First Edition. Octavo. 70 pages, illustrations, portrait. A scarce book (Library of Congress duplicate]. William Callaghan (1797-1866) had a devoted negro helper on his farm named Isaac Crawford who he had known since Isaac was about 12 years old. They worked together, became friends, and developed a kind of trust that forgot the issues of race. Though he was free by the Emancipation Proclamation, he remained close to his friend until William's death. This small work also shows a great deal about pioneer life in Missouri prior to the Civil War. Bound in its green paper wraps printed in black, then bound into a folder of black paper covered boards backed in green cloth with library sticker to front board noting "Copy 2". Inside front folder with mounted plate of the Library of Congress. A very good copy.
