"The author of this book had a peculiarly good opportunity to study the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia as a soldier taking part in these campaigns and seeing much of their technical side. At the outbreak of the War Between the States he enlisted in the Second Company of the Richmond Howitzers and participated in all the principal engagements of the Army of Northern Virginia from Seven Pines to Fredericksburg." (foreword).
