The Military History of an Un-military People is an illuminating record of the growth of an Army. Despite the fact that Canadians are essentially an unmilitary people, they have been compelled by circumstance to participate in warfare from the days of the first French settlers to the conclusion of the North Atlantic Treaty. Professor Stanley is the first Canadian historian to gather a record and an analysis of Canada's four centuries of military action into a single comprehensive volume. It follows the development of Canada's military tradition and military organization over four hundred years, from the days of marauding Indians to the recent action in Korea. For the interested reader, the student, the teacher, and the soldier, it traces the relation of de-fence to politics, the transition from universal compulsory service to the volunteer system, and the gradual development of Canadian control over the military forces and the military policy of Canada. It includes accurate accounts of the early struggles with the Iroquois, the fall of Quebec, Canadian participation in the American Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Rebellions of 1837-1838, the Fenian Raids, the Red River Rising, the North-West Rebellion, the South African War, the First and Second World Wars, and the Korean War. These battle-accounts are supplemented by 22 maps.
